What do the different NHTSA side-impact ratings mean?

When the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NTHSA) began testing vehicle safety standards, the government agency only tested for front-end impact statistics because that was the major injury-causing accident at the time. Later, when facts began to roll in about the devastating effect of side-impacts, the agency began testing new cars for that type of safety as well.

Because of the horrendous types of injuries caused by a side-impact, NHTSA changed the level of result patterns to encourage new vehicle manufacturers to provide more protection against side-impact
