How does a Voltmeter Work?

When your battery is near the end of life, it might warn you by delaying the start of your vehicle. Or, the lights may dim upon starting. A handy device to have around the house is a voltmeter. Within minutes you can test your battery to find out if it's near the end or if something else might be weak in your vehicle.

Essentially, a voltmeter will measure the potential difference in the electrical circuit between two points. Connecting the positive ends of the voltmeter and your battery, then the negative ends, the voltmeter will report back the differences in the circuit. As the voltmeter will record 100% circuit, any number reported is your battery's circuit. Any number below 12.2+ or 50% charge means your battery is weak.
