How to Test Your Car's Battery

Want to test your battery at home? You can do so with a multimeter. These are handy devices you can pick up at any store with an automotive department or find online used for a much lower price. You only need one, and it helps you test your car's battery and electrical system. Most mechanics recommend checking your car battery twice a year, especially before winter and summer. These are extreme temperature months that will often test your car battery's capacity.

When your battery is fully charged, it should be able to display voltage at 9.6 volts for at least 16 seconds. This shows that your battery is fully charged and operating as normal. If you notice issues with your headlights dimming or if your headlights get brighter as you turn on the engine, you may have a failing battery or problems with your alternator.
